The Pro Day: what purpose does it really serve?

Ryans wasn't bad, and Manning's wasn't as bad.

You make it sound like he arrived 30 minutes late, flicked everyone the V's, slapped Gus's bald head, tweeked Shad's tache and told everyone to join him in the backroom of the strip club for coke and hookers.

He threw a few bad passes, in underwear, to guys running against air, it means nothing.

Hardly anyone took notes during Ryan's workout. I mean, the scouts had notepads, but they were closed. Chiefs coach Herm Edwards didn't take any notes -- he stood there casually chatting with a friend. The three representatives from the Vikings didn't jot anything down, either. After the 6-foot-5, 227-pounder's work was done, there was no buzz. Instead, people just seemed content.

Vikings GM Rick Spielman said that Ryan "moves around better than people think," and that "his arm strength is plenty good enough."

The scouts really wanted to see how Ryan handled the day, not just how he threw. How a college quarterback transitions into an NFL one is almost as important as how he throws the deep out. Think about it: Drafting a quarterback in the first round can often do more harm than good.
