The D is equally capable of stacking guys and pushing each other for a momentum advantage.

Because when defenders push the runner back, it's called forward progress and the ball is marked down where the runner started to get pushed back.  When the offensive lineman pushes the runner forward, the runner gets the benefit of the extra yards and is not marked down where the offensive lineman started the push.  They should just blow the ball down where the offensive player makes the push then I'm ok with them pushing all they want if it makes them happy.

When defenders push the runner back, they give the runner the opportunity to disengage or regain forward progress. If progress is halted, they whistle the scrimmage dead. 

Until that forward progress is halted, the play remains alive. So are you suggesting that if a defender engages ball carrier, no other defender can assist with hampering forward progress too? If an RB is still chugging against one or more defenders, I see no reason why a guard cannot jump in to push the pile forward. The defense can make the choice to either swarm the defender (hopefully to stop forward progress) or to engage the lineman to avoid crashing the pile.
