They are afraid of Trump and the base. They aren't afraid of the base by themselves because the base has no power. The base can't choose who runs in primaries and gets support from GOP. Now if the base takes over the local committees that recommend and vote to support candidates, then the GOP is in trouble.

Some local things are happening but right now the GOP will just crush the base if Trump is not there to drain the swamp. Same thing already happened to the Tea Party.
