A write-up on two Centers in the upcoming Draft

#13

i haven't looked much at the centre class and can't comment on richburg but I have watched a fair bit of swanson and martin and i feel like they are two halves of an elite centre

swanson is one of the best lineman in pass protection i've seen coming out of college. His mental game is very good and he seems to read his blocks very quickly and have a nack for getting in the right position. I've not seen him get really beat on in pass protection in all the film i've seen.

In the run game it's a different story. He doesn't get beat but he doesn't beat his man either. He has a good initial punch and opens up a slight gap then sets his feet and holds him their. He doesn't finish blocks and I don't think he has the strength to drive his opponent backwards beyond that initial burst. His combine numbers suggested quite good mobility and explosiveness but his upper body strength is lacking. I also think at 6-5 he sets his feet and bends his back to prevent opponent from getting under him and driving him backwards but it also means he can't drive through... so some technical coaching could do wonders for his run blocking

i think he can start day 1 with his mental game allowing him to compete but physically he needs to get stronger to be a dominant centre in the nfl.

martin has all the physical tools, he is the perfect size, moves really well and finishes blocks He is a strong physical player who drives through beautifully in the run block whilst he has great feet and the mobility to pull or slide along the line. I don't think he has the same mental aptitude as swanson in reading the game.

Where as swanson seems to have a nack for being in the right place I've seen a few occassions where martin seems to be half a second too late in getting to his man. If he can get hands on the guy with that solid base under him he is very difficult to move but he doesn't read the game very fluidly which can lead to him being caught out.

As i said if we had martin's physical tools and swanson's mental tools you'd have a first round centre.

i think martin should be the higher prospect as he will probably be easier to develop mentally than swanson physcially

i think martin will go mid second round swanson early third so I think swanson would be better value than overdrafting martin in the second
