Most Chevy Silverados sold today are 2.7L turbo gas engine.  This is their least expensive base model.  It offers about 350 lb*ft of torque and gets 20mpg combined.

20 years ago, the most commonly sold 4WD Silverado had a 4.3L naturally aspirated gas engine and offered about 260 lb*ft of torque and got 15mpg combined.

Even if you want to stick with full size trucks, you have options to use less gas. If you buy a newer used truck, it will probably do better on gas than an older used truck.
