Zero understanding of coach speak. A HC isn't going to bash a rookie that may have upside, and he's not gonna bash him in year two either if he has literally NO ONE on the roster that represents an upgrade.  
The only option he had at center was the one OL player playing equally as bad as Fortner. 

With no help on the way - you don't ruin the kids confidence to keep going by beating him up at a damn press conference.

No, I believe he has been brief and said the same thing over and over BECAUSE when the guy was picked he did not want him or wanted to get a replacement in last year's draft. Every time he did this it reminded the draft pick brain trust just who believed the guy could play.  Also, like you stated he had no other options so dissing the player did him no good. Look every player on that team knows about where they stand and how they did. That includes our center...

At the end of the day it was Doug being politically correct....
