Why don't you use your brain, man. There're a thousand different reasons why the nation is different. One of which is welfare, yes. Of which illegal immigrants are abusing, certainly. National identity is different. American values are different. Government bureaucracy is different. America's status as a world power is different. Its enemies are different. I mean, dude... Not sure what you mean by "national identity," that's a nebulous thing that will change regardless of what we do.
Not sure what you mean by enemies.  We weren't on great terms with the German empire or the Russian empire or Austrian empire, yet, nearly all of the immigrants came from these places.
