Not sure what you mean by "national identity," that's a nebulous thing that will change regardless of what we do.
Not sure what you mean by enemies.  We weren't on great terms with the German empire or the Russian empire or Austrian empire, yet, nearly all of the immigrants came from these places.

Why do you quibble? I said the US's status as a world power was different. Is that true or untrue. Was it the dominant superpower in the world? National identity is nebulous.
