Now most people have it tougher.  The people who don't have a realistic path right now to having their mortgage paid off, a good deal of that goes away with making sure more houses get built.

Most logical people aren't in a rush to pay off a 2.5% mortgage. Also, anyone who proactively tells you how well they are doing without being asked are typically lying.

That'd be because carrying debt has been ingrained into society. Debt free living is weird and doesn't help the rich get richer, so society tells you you're doing great if you owe 300k for 30 years at just 2.5% interest.
