That'd be because carrying debt has been ingrained into society. Debt free living is weird and doesn't help the rich get richer, so society tells you you're doing great if you owe 300k for 30 years at just 2.5% interest.

It's almost free money. Essentially any investment is going to make over 2.5% a year. For someone in their earning years throwing extra principal on a 2.5% loan is leaving a lot of potential money on the table.

Not all debt is bad IMO. It's all about leverage.
