The "Special" player or "Safe" pick: You Decide

#22

Quote:I think the answer to your questiion  depends on the state of a club. Lets use the 49rs for example, they are built to be contenders every year right now so if im their GM I take the special player. The safe guy might be solid, giving you a starter with decent production. Now getting a special player can make others around you better. A guy like Clowney can draw more attention and allow the other side to produce more. Safe wouldnt allow that...

For the Jags taking the Special player is a huge gamble because its really boom or bust. Making the wrong choice could potentially set us back years (see Gabbert). On the flip side taking a safe player may just be another guy. Lets call Teddy the safe guy because he does most things good but isnt an elte QB...SO if Teddy turns out to be a Qb that ranks somewhere between 15-20 what have we really done? Did playing safe help us out at all?

This year we should take the Boom or bust guy, Clowney, Watkins or Manziel...Any of those guys would give us a superstar worth giving extra attention and possibly making others better. I have my concerns with Manziel but I think he would make our offense interesting.

For the OP that said he read that Clowney took plays off and he didnt work hard in his senior year...A, he isnt a senior. B. He still comes off as a very immature kid. C He watched one of his best friends (Marcus Lattimore) get his leg destroyed the prior year and lose millions of dollars. He was certainly a top 15 pick and when his leg was destroyed his career was almost over..Its my opinion that Clowney played scared, that he was scared to get hurt. He didnt go hard, because Im sure many Olinemen chopped his legs from under him on a regular basis. He shouldnt have plyed last year if this was the case. He should of pulled out of school, just sat and trained if he was so scared. While he would have taken heat for not playing, at least it would make more sense than going at 50% and most guys would have respected him for being honest.

I think Clowney has the potential to be one of the scariest players in the league ever, a better version of Peppers. Clowney reminds me of Lawrence Taylor, thats the highest praise a defender in the front 7 could get. IF Clowney matures and focuses on the game, he could have a similar impact. IF he doesnt mature, we will see Jamarcus Russell of the Defense.

Give me Clowney, Watkins and Manziel in that order
I agree with what you posted but i would have it Watkins, Manziel, Clowney.  But with Watkins being the safe player i would take the next BAP in my special category and get Manziel and hope that clowney doesn't turn into peppers or LT lol.  It's a big toss up but opinions will be heard all month.

Season Tix, Section 409

2023 and still counting.....SB will finally be ours soon enough.
