Is it, though? Were you here when the Jaguars claimed Trent Edwards on waivers and a sizeable chunk of this board acted like he was the savior, here to lead us out of the dark days of Garrard? Lots of people went ga-ga for a below-average QB with physical limitations. Freeman's also a below-average QB, but physical limitations are not his issue.

 

Edit to add: I'm not saying he's any worse than Gabbert or Henne. I am saying that he's not the long-term answer at the position. If he had the potential to be, I'd be all for signing him. Since he's not, stick with what we have and clean house at the position in the offseason. Worst-case scenario would be Freeman coming in and leading the team to a 3-13 record. Not nearly enough for him to be the answer, but just enough that the Jaguars are stuck with the third overall pick and having to surrender a king's ransom for Teddy or Clowney.

Vested veterans released before the trade deadline are not subject to waivers, meaning they can sign with the team they want to at whatever salary they can get. Vested veterans released after the trade deadline are subject to waivers. It's a defense mechanism to keep bad teams from releasing stars who would bee-line for playoff teams if the opportunity for the Jaguars to claim them didn't exist.
