Ode to "let's talk about" ll

I just started reading the latest novel from one of my favorite authors, John Sanford. He has written 30+ books in the 'Prey' series with his main character, Lucas Davenport, rising from Minnesota cop to now being in the Marshall service. This one is titled, Toxic Prey.
The new book's theme is interesting. It's about a scientist who decides he needs to rid Earth of most of the population (because we're killing it) by somehow merging the Marburg virus (the nastier cousin of ebola) with the measles virus and unleashing it. Marburg by itself is relatively easy to contain if it's caught in time but measles is like a wild land fire. Hella hard to contain much less put out. Even Covid isn't as transmissible as measles according to the storyline. I'm not far enough into it to say what is happening for sure. Law enforcement has just realized something worse than Covid is about to happen so they're looking for the guy. Meanwhile the guy is at someone's house experimenting on people with this merged virus to see how they react. It's insane that these kinds of things can happen or be thought to even try. It makes me think of my answer to NYCs question about why would China purposely unleash Covid on the world's population. My answer was- because they wanted to see how society would react. There are lunatics roaming the planet who genuinely wish to do harm on people and in ways that we've already lived through as well as scenarios we can't even imagine. That freaks me out more than pretty much anything else. Forget Russia and North Korea. I worry about the quiet ones. Covid killed a lot of people. Can you imagine what a virus like the one in this book would do? |
