The comment was obviously intended to elicit sympathy for Trayvon Martin, at the expense of George Zimmerman, whom police had already determined to have been acting in self-defense.  Coincidentally, the incident occurred in the middle of the Presidential election cycle and Obama was quick to play the race card for his personal political gain.


There was also another incident, when a friend of his (who was black) was arrested and Obama spoke out immediately, stating the police (who were white) had acted "stupidly".

The police determined that they did not have enough witness testimony to prove that Zimmerman was not acting in self defense.

The witness testimony said the two men were wrestling.  They did not see the start of the physical fight and did not agree about who was "winning" that fight before the shot went off.

The one thing everyone, including Zimmerman, agreed about, was that Zimmerman had never seen Trayvon before, but suspected Trayvon of robbing homes in the neighborhood, and Zimmerman tried to pursue and contact him for that reason. 

And that was the one and only aspect of the case that Obama's comment was about. Obama said that he also got suspicious stares as a young man.  It's there in his autobiography, which he wrote before ever running for public office.
