The more interesting fact is it takes a civil war to start a new viable political party in this country. Because it is so hard, new people with new ideas for new times take over an old party instead of starting their own. It has happened many times already. The Democratic party's ideology has died and been replaced at least twice since the days of the KKK and lynchings.
