I disagree, because if Trump was not in the race, the Democrats could no longer tell Biden, "You have to withdraw so we can stop Trump."  Without that argument, I think Biden would have stayed in the race.

I wonder if that was the primary argument to get Biden to step aside. He's fading quickly and they saw the writing on the wall. Trump was a strong motivation, but I think even if Trump were not the Republican candidate, they would have still "convinced" him to step aside. They most likely would have leveled the same threat to get him to stand aside this time; drop out or no money will be raised for a presidential library.
