I guarantee you it doesn't [BLEEP] matter if you were/are NG, Reserves or AD, if you were in the military for more than a month you're going to know your rank, you're going to know your chain of command's rank from bottom to top, you're going to know every rank from E-1/O-1 to the highest of whatever your branch is/was. They pound this into your brain so you know how to address each other, especially those higher ranking than you. 

Why on earth do you talk about things you know nothing about? YOU'RE NOT SMARTER THAN THE REST OF US but you're an expert at putting your foot in your mouth. 

You wouldn't last a week in the military.

It may be a "small issue" to someone like you who never served the country and has no clue about how the military operates.  However, to veterans like me it's a huge dishonor and shows a huge lack of character.  He knew what he was doing, and it was all for political gain.

A couple of things just to try to attempt to educate you.

1.  I was in a similar situation when I left the Navy.  I was a "frocked" E-6 which means that I was selected to be advanced and was able to wear the rank and assume the title of Petty Officer First Class.  However, I was never paid as an E-6 so my DD-214 discharge paperwork lists me as an E-5.  Even I as an enlisted lower ranking member understood this.

2.  It's not "just one rank above".  There is a difference between an E-9 and a Command E-9.  In my squadron we had two, a Maintenance Master Chief and a Command Master Chief.  The CMC held way more power and answered only to the Commanding Officer (CO) or the Executive Officer (XO).  Not so much the same for our Maintenance Master Chief.

Finally, regarding your comment doubting that the lower enlisted would even know the rank structure, once again as usual you are wrong.  I can only speak about the Navy, but knowing the rank structure and how to identify each rank was a requirement just to pass basic training.

You really should keep yourself out of discussions regarding military service since your ignorance is evident.
