Ritalin and Adderall happened along with helicopter parents and social media. 

I take Adderall for ADD but didn't start until I was around 27-28 years old with a fully formed brain and just as the Internet was becoming more common in homes. And I didn't have helicopter parents, thank God. I probably would've benefitted from a small dose when I was a kid because I had a hard time learning in school due to lack of ability to focus. How even a small dose could've affected my brain development is unknown but it probably wouldn't have been for the better. 

I've never looked to see if there are studies that show how those meds have altered how the brain works over time regardless of the age folks started taking it. Probably because I don't want to know if it's bad news since I've taken it off and off for almost half of my life. 

I went a bit sideways there from my intended thought but like ng story short, I do believe it's a combination of meds, upbringing and social media.

I suspect that it's smartphones alone.
The brain is easily addicted to being able to change the presentation with a single click and clicking and changing more and more often.  My wife has never taken brain meds and her attention span for phone content is way shorter than mine. Overprescribed meds don't help, but they aren't the main story.
I could share my Ritalin story but it'll be another time.
