From a coaching stand point, I’m going into the game(s) that matter with all my horses. The preseason is for getting ready for the real season and to trim your roster down to your best 53 players. 

If they get injured in week 1 vs preseason week 3, that still means that I entered the game that matters, with all my horses and I’ll take my chances from there.

Looking at it from a down the road perspective, I want my players to have 17 game legs going into the playoffs, instead of 20 game legs. 

It’s all about mileage, just like exotic cars and limiting the risk. Not to mention, these boys turn it up a notch during the regular season. The preseason is vanilla because in some cases the guys on the 90 man roster will be playing against you come week 1.

Yeah but how are your starters getting ready for the regular season by playing little if any during the preseason? And they’re not playing the equivalent of 20 games if they come in for a few quarters during the preseason.  Midseason form is a thing.  You get there faster in my opinion by playing some in the preseason.  Some guys in the league played 0 snaps in the preseason and not because they were dealing with injury.  

I think the primary reason guys are held out is because of what I said previously about the risk being greater being on the field with guys that are doing everything they can to make the 53 and get that salary guaranteed.  If the two squads or the league in general would agree to something like 1’s go against 1’s for 1 drive in preseason game 1, 2 drives in game 2 and 2 quarters in game 3, I think it would reduce that risk down the line.  We kinda did that this year except for we did 2 drives in game 1 and I know Lawrence didn’t play in game 2, but don’t recall how many other 1’s didn’t play.  The Falcons ran their 2’s out there against us in game 3 though.
