Last year he was targeted to replace the nonexistent running game. This week the running game was fine, so it makes sense he gets fewer targets.

Exactly. His receptions were high and his yards per catch were pretty low compared to other receiving TE's around the league last year because he was the recipient of a lot of our screens and other short passing game plays.  In retrospect, we probably overachieved a bit at 8-3 last year as we were using scheme to overcome deficiencies until being exposed against SF which was then compounded by Trevor's injury not long after.
