Trump is the most divisive figure in politics, I don't see any mystery here. There are some folks out there who are crazy enough to think they are doing our country a service by taking a shot at him. Not the first time, won't be the last time a candidate went through this.

Does Trump support project 2025?
The team behind it are 90% former or current members of his staff. 
Of course he tries to distance himself because it is radical - but it mentions his name 200 times and he references specific parts of its strategy in every one of his rallies. 

It's the plan and everyone knows it even if he tries to play dumb. 

This has got to be common knowledge to anyone that opposes him enough to want to kill him.
And the latest would be assassin was a republican who'd only become disenfranchised as recently as three years ago.

How many times does Trump have to say p2025 isn’t his before you actually believe him?
It is beyond me why anyone would believe anything that guy says
