However, if you can swing it, this is why I tell people to never depend or rely on anybody but yourself and your immediate family (if you're lucky to even have that).

Always have a stash of back-up battery banks for phones, devices and a good supply of water and dry goods (bag of dry beans runs cheap and you can stock that up for months on end) and a few cans of propane and a grill to connect it with.

If you're really lucky and have the money? Get you a Generator.

$300 bucks for a small generator keep your fridge and a few lights running, having a couple bags of ice on hand as well. I usually dump tray ice into ziplocks and use those. I have a small swamp cooler A/C that can run as well if absolutely needed.

Edit: the one I have is now $450, guess I should've accounted for inflation...
