Well there are three distinct entities that you're lumping together.
The media, the Democrat elected politicians, and the Democrat voters.
The media is trying to make money.  They amped up everything Trump did, to get lots of people watching, and Trump played along with it!
The Democrat elected politicians didn't want to play along, wanted to save their ammo, but, it was a prisoners dilemma.  The first Democrat to offer themselves to the media for an outrageous reaction to Trump's outrageous action would get their name in the media, and move up in the Democrat ranks.
The Democrat voters, they were just along for the ride.  Don't judge them for any of that.
