I agree and so do most of the economists.  That said, given my own personal situation and ability to live off of minimal purchases throughout the year, I'd almost welcome Trump's vision coming to reality to see what actually happens.  It's kind of easy to go status quo and debate what would happen in certain international trade scenarios so let's put things into reality so we don't have to play hypothetical scenarios.

I'd love to see what impact tariffs have on autos manufactured in Mexico (GM, Ford, Nissan, VW, Toyota) and China (Tesla)
