Absolutely.  

But I would add, fixing the deficit/debt problem will not be easy.  We will have to cut Medicare and social security, and tax cuts have to be off the table.

There will have to be austerity measures across the board to reel in the deficit. The problem for enacting such measures is twofold. 

The first is a populace (individuals, corporations, government agencies and many other entities too numerous to list) addicted to government largess and the expectation of a larger handout every year. 
The second is a political class, of both parties, that is more interested in keeping those elected office paychecks and the accompanying graft rather than doing the dirty work of getting the budget under control. 

We need to throw the bums out. Sounds simplistic, but the entrenched directorate is bleeding this country dry.
