I would agree that the threat of tariffs could spark the Mexicans to do more about illegal immigration to the US and the flow of drugs.   But I agree somewhat with the Mexican President that demand from the US is at least partially responsible for the flow of drugs and people across the border.  And as long as we keep buying the drugs, and employing the people, it will be almost impossible for the Mexican government to stop the flow of people and drugs into the US from Mexico.  

I think we should be aware of what the Mexican government is already doing and the fact that they have already stopped the caravans.  This claim that Trump's threats induced the Mexicans to stop the caravans is false, because the Mexicans have already almost completely stopped the caravans.  Of course that doesn't mean they've stopped all the illegals from crossing the border.  

I'm already on record opposing the kind of tariffs Trump is threatening, so I wouldn't have made such a threat, because I wouldn't be willing to carry it out.  

And I don't agree that if anyone but Trump was leading this campaign 90% of left leaning individuals would be on board.  I don't think left leaning individuals care much about the invasion across the border.
