There's some overlap, and it is a fantastic movie.  "Network" is another movie that shows the "Trump spirit" existed a long time ago.  

The difference is, stop reading here if you don't want me to spoil the ending, when Andy Griffith's character was caught admitting that he thinks his followers are fools, the network executives pull the plug and he has no path back to relevance. That's not at all like today for two reasons. One, Trump has said many times that his followers are basically fools, and they either fail to understand what he's really saying, or think that he's talking about someone else, not them. Two, with the internet, once you reach a certain critical mass of name recognition, you can always find another platform and you can never really be canceled.
