Brady obviously put Belichick on the map, however, Belichick should be given more credit for his ability to identify talent on defense, coach a defense and establish an identity. Especially earlier on in Brady's career. It's not like they were scoring 30+ points in all of those Superbowl wins and they did have a healthy running game for the most part. 

People forget Corey Dillion literally running that offense for them in the early 2000's for that one nice Superbowl run. If you go back and look at Belichick's defensive units though, they were typically top quality, always in the top five - ten range, he even had the number one ranked unit a few times.

Playing in a dog [BLEEP] AFC East also helped BOTH of them with their path towards success.
