You need to read more liberal forums. Approval rating can absolutely be affected by the base. Leftists, many of whom are radical, do not like Trump or his policies. Democrats are powerless to stop him, so their inaction is riling up their base, even though Democrats in power understand that many moderates have grown tired of their bad policies and are trying to move back to the center. It will take a combination of bad will from Trump and a return to center for moderates to embrace the Democrats again. That doesn't fix their base, though. They are still radical and are NOT moving back to the center. Dems have a problem that can only be fixed by Trump failing to do what he says he'll do.
