He was lying, or being unethical. I don't know which of those two it was, but I know it was one of those two. It's just logic. 
Imagine you told me that there are three points out in the universe, and I said, "those three points either form a line or a triangle." Then you argued, "how can you know that? I didn't tell you where the three points are. How can you tell me that I am wrong when you are ignorant?"
That's the corner you've backed yourself into. How's the view?
