If he had done a comment box style survey, the results would be inaccurate, and he would know that they were inaccurate. But he represented his results as being accurate. So this scenario also falls under the "he lied" possibility. 
As I said, there are really only two possibilities, either he was unethical, or he is lying.

How the heck do you know there wasn’t some poll done by psychologist nationwide?  Man do you have your heels dug in deep on this.  Did that meme strike a nerve or what?

Maybe there was a nationwide general poll. I don't think there was, and if there was I don't think it would have shown that result, but it's not material to what we're talking about either way. He said he was talking about his own clients. He did not say that he looked at polling data and generalized about his clients from there. Your scenario is plausible, but it falls under the category, "he was lying". 
as for whether nerves were struck, it takes two to tango. You guys really seem to want this s*** to be true.
