Darius Slay had major growing pains as a rookie.   He had a knee procedure back in May,  which cost him plenty of off-season practice reps.    Being that Slay is a former JUCO player who primarily played man to man coverage with Mississippi St.,  it was a difficult adjustment to the NFL for Slay. 

 

Slay was benched during both the 1st and 2nd games of the season.  With Rashean Mathis stabilizing the RCB position and then taking over as the starter.   Slay came off the bench in a few games and played better than he did as a starter.  But it wasn't until Thanksgiving Day that Slay had another opportunity to start.  This time as a result of an injury to Chris Houston.  Slay had his best game in a one sided Lions victory.  

 

Unfortunately,  Slay hurt his knee leading up to the game at Philadelphia.   It cost him 3 more games.  Slay came back for the season finale in Minnesota and played well.   I'm encouaged by the improvement and former NFL great CB-S Rod Woodson taking Slay under his wings.  But there's still a long road ahead for Slay in his development.   The good news is the talent and desire are there.
