Honestly, I think the Jags saw the Browns offer as mostly trying to prevent a divisional rival from getting the player.  The Cardinals likely saw the same thing with trading Levi Brown to the Steelers.  Imagine if we were competing for a divisional championship -- and we just needed a TE to push us over the edge.  We offer a rebuilding team a 3rd and a 4th for that TE.  But before the deal goes through the Colts, who already have a good TE -- trades a 2nd for him.  

 

I think ultimately... we got fair value for Monroe.  I think Caldwell is thinking two steps ahead:

 

-Not going to re-sign Monroe.  LT money is too expensive when you have a young player like Luke on your team ready to play the position

-Trading Monroe in the draft last year would have given him little time to evaluate Luke first

-Franchising Him costs too much (Think Jake Long)

-Compensation pick would be lessened by Free Agents we will sign in order to aid the rebuild

 

More would have been nice.  But if it's enough ammunition to move up at some point and grab a player that will make a difference, then I think it'll end up fine.
