The Steelers spent a 1st round pick in 1974 and took Lynn Swann, following that up later in the same draft and took John Stallworth and won four Super Bowls.

 

Washington, who utilized very few first round picks under Bobby Beathard, used one to select Art Monk.  They wound up winning 3 Super Bowls with him.

 

The 49ers traded multiple picks to move up to 16th overall and selected a guy named Jerry Rice.  They won 3 more Super Bowls after that move.

 

Dallas selected Michael Irvin in the first round in 1988, spent a second rounder on Alexander Wright in 1990,  a first rounder in Alvin Harper in 1991, a 2nd rounder in Jimmy Smith in 1992, and a second rounder in Kevin Williams in 1993, and they won 3 Super Bowls in the 1990s.

 

The Colts spent first round picks on Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne and won a Super Bowl.

 

The Steelers spent a first round pick on Santonio Holmes and won a Super Bowl.

 

If you don't want Watkins, that's fine.  But don't pretend that Super Bowl champions have never invested early at the WR position.

 

...and how many of those were taken at 3rd overall, or even top 5?

 

Thats my point with the WR position. You don't chase it high in the draft.

 

ESPECIALLY not in a deep draft at the position, like this year...

Deep draft or not, Clowney is a star caliber player.

 

I would for the right offer. I wouldn't swap out of the 3rd for peanuts...but for the right offer, Clowney or not, I'd trade down out of it.
