That also implies Manziel and Bridgewater weren't seen as franchise QBs, or at least carried significant risk that put them well out of Bortles league in their eyes.

 

I think that's probably the case.

 

Had the guys gone with a receiver at 3, we would have wound up picking from the 2nd tier QBs later in the draft.  I think it was imperative for this team to identify the top tier QB they felt gave them the best prospect to become their franchise guy, and grab him at #3. They got that out of the way, and it allowed them to have a lot more flexibility for the remainder of the draft.  They could also still grab another QB later on.  I'd be fine with that.  But, if they had passed on grabbing a QB at 3, we'd be hoping we could get our guy next year.  We don't have to worry about that now....hopefully.
