I've never seen or heard him say he doesn't play the smoke screen game, but even if he did, that's exactly the kind of thing someone playing the smoke screen game would say, now isn't it?

 

What I do remember him saying is that he doesn't like to be dishonest, and he learned that from his parents.  That he would rather just not answer a question, if he cannot do so truthfully, because he doesn't want to lie to you.

 

Having said that, it seems like you don't understand the differences there.  What he said about Manziel is truthful.  Bortles likely needs to sit a while, and Manziel can probably play earlier.  That doesn't mean Manziel is the guy we want.  If you (or others) chose to interpret it that way, I'd have to say that was the point.  You can smokescreen without lying to anyone.
