There is no question that this draft gets the highest possible grade at this point. If Bortles is given sufficient time to develop before they throw him in, he has fantastic potential. As has been stated on the board, all of his flaws are correctable. He not only has the size and mobility which you look for, but his intangibles are off the charts. Caldwell made the correct choice with Bortles and could not afford to risk trading down before selecting him.
Even though the ultimate grade of this this draft class will primarily be based on Bortles' success, the remainder of the selections were off the charts! Who would have believed Marquis Lee would fall to pick 39? As much as I loved Watkins, this guy was considered the number 1 receiver prior to his injury. As a Penn State alumnus, I watched every one of Robinson's games and the guy was " a man among boys." I have compared him to Blackmon because of the way he is able to snag balls while blanketed by defenders. He also has great run after the catch abilities despite not being the fastest receiver. He plays fast which is more important. The only negatives are that he sometimes runs lazy routes and can sulk a little when not getting the ball enough. Both of these are correctable and I see him and Lee, barring injuries, to be a dynamic combination for years to come.
I am almost as excited about the middle rounds, last few rounds and even a couple of the undrafted free agents. Colvin looks like a real keeper and it's obvious the staff loved him from coaching him at the Senior Bowl. He may not be the fastest corner, but seems to have all the other skills to be successful in the NFL and may even be moved to free safety if he fits there. Both Smiths' were great value picks and fit needs. I had heard they loved Chris and were glad he didn't perform that well at the combine so he might drop to the 4th or 5th round- which he did. He could be the Leo that they are looking for and Telvin will add much needed speed to the linebacking corps. What an upgrade with he and Dakoda Watson ! Finally, to be able to get Storm Johnson with the 7th round pick was fantastic. If he learns to be a better blocker, he could be as successful a pick as Jennings was in the 7th round.
The only negatives, and I'm reaching, are that they didn't get a starting center. They could have had Martin, but then would not have had Robinson so it's hard to complain about that. They also didn't get a pass catching tight end, but there's no way they could have met all their needs and Harbour will be o.k. to pair with Lewis for 1 more year. It was disappointing to lose Christian Jones, but he didn't even get drafted so I doubt they thought that highly of him anyway.
All in all, I couldn't be more pleased and the arrow is pointing way up for the Jaguars!
