A Study In "tanking"

#35

Quote:Just the idea of tanking for a specific player is being stupid and ignoring the success rate of the Top ten QB picks.  So many people think Bridgewater is a cant miss lock for the HOF.  There are no locks, we don't know if a player will blow out a knee in game one, or a player thought a lock by everyone, ( see Jamarcus Russell, Vince Young..) turns into a bust.

If you need a QB, and you can draft in the top 10, the statistics show that is as good a position as can be foreseen to grab a quality starter.

We will have a top 5 pick, and it doesn't have to be Bridgewater.

You try to win, that is a given, then let the chips fall where they may. The further you are from the top ten selections, the less chance you have that a franchise type QB will be selected. But in the top ten, there are franchise QB's to be had thoughout.

Perhaps we have been spoiled by seeing a once is lifetime talent like Peyton picked number one. He is special and I don't care where you draft, those types can not be predicted, he is great in all aspects of the game including Longetivity, and nobody can predict that.

There are plenty of great QB's taken with mid to late first round picks, Flacco, Matt ryan, Ben Roethlisberger, Griffin, Tannehill, Aaron Rodgers, Rivers, on and on. If you get lucky, you can get a great QB even later obviously, like a Montana or a Brady, but the point is that 1st rounders in the top ten have as good a chance as THE number one pick. The Vince Youngs and Sam Bradfords are proof of that. They were the Teddy Bridgewaters of a few years ago.

No tanking should be wished for, the chief is correct, we will get a top ten selectioni no matter if we squeak out a win or two. That is all that is needed with some luck and research.

So l hope we win some games, or at least hope that we are competetive, instead of hoping to lose every game, just to satisfy all the people with Teddy posters above their bed.

It's such a stupid mentality hoping to lose,  and I am sure any NFL expert would say the same based on History such as the OP presented.

Listen to the facts, no team tanks on purpose, no real fan hopes their team loses every game just to draft one player that may or may not work out. The people saying that [BAD WORD REMOVED] cannot have tickets, it's a bummer to drive home after a loss.

Depends on what you call tanking. Do the coaches and players intentionally not try their hardest to win the games? No, of course they are doing everything they can to win. But the GM and Gus knew prior to the year they were going to be horrible. And they intentionally made no actions in order to try to be mediocre, which IMO is the correct move. Is that considered tanking? I think it does, but its not a bad thing. In the process of tanking you find the pieces that are worth keeping for the future, while improving your draft position, which is key in a rebuild.
