When the pressure and the need to do things in a hurry is on, people always fall back on what is more familiar which are old techniques and habits. That's just human nature. You have to put a person in an environment that allows them the opportunity to concentrate on doing things the correct way without having to worry about the negative consequences that come with trying to do these things in a real game. Once the season is on for a starter, techniques and fundamentals take a back seat to game planning.
