The players are under rules collectively bargained by the NFLPA. The substance Mathis is suspended for is a banned substance as agreed to by the NFLPA. He has no leg to stand on.

 

What are Goodell's powers to suspend an owner? There is nothing written into the bylaws like there is with the players. My guess is Goodell will take action prior to the season as the pressure is mounting.

 

Nobody even knows if the owners have by laws.  The NBA owners do, and many of them came to light with the Sterling thing.  I would imagine the NFL owners have something possibly similar.  The owners/coaches have some sort of policing by the commisioners office.  The Saints/New England Patriots/Bud Adams situations prove that.

 

The main point is, you cant punish people that work for you for things that seem to be much more mundane....and then not police yourselves.  It's a double standard, and when the next collective bargaining agreement comes up, I would make my case for it.
