Gus Lays To Rest Any Thought Of QB Controversy

Quote:Here's the flaw in your logic.  There ISN'T a competition at the QB position.

Bortles was drafted to be the starter for this team.  He's not competing with Henne for that job.

Henne was re-signed to be the starter for this team until Bortles is ready to assume that role.  He's not competing with Bortles for the job either.

I don't know why this is so difficult to understand.  The ONLY competition here is between Bortles and himself.  How quickly he can develop the level of confidence with Gus and Dave in his ability to assume the starting role is all on him.

I agree with every word. I'm not certain that it would be a great idea to remove the concept of best player wins the starting job at all, or any other position. That approach could lead to at best, disgruntled veteran players. If starting positions are given as a gift of draft position, rather than obtained via mono-a-mano competition, I doubt that would be considered a positive road  map towards a teams success. Not that I think I would be better than Matt Millen, simply musing of the NFL GM position.

Nevertheless, when a team does use a very high first round draft pick on a Quarterback, it is possible that he could have the job handed to him at some point, totally worthy of the starting position, or not. Given that It is unlikely that two players equally project practice competence to in game capable aptitude, the in game evaluation process would be at worse a prudent experiment. I state that barring a possible playoff berth being at stake, or some other situation I may be failing to consider. Henne very well could be the better QB in practice under little pressure, yet wane in competence at game speed, while Bortles could excel, and surpass Henne under the same in game pressure. We are yet to witness how this will play out, but I feel the anticipation as it builds. A new Jaguars day is born, it was a very long pregnancy. Smile

Then comes the groin pull three minutes into the opening game, and we watch our shiny new Quarterback rushed into duty to throw an interception with his first NFL regular season pass, or his first touchdown of the five touchdown, 420 yard day. Sigh!
