He's made some dumb decisions, and even repeated a few, but he's not dumb. 

 

He's just stubborn and has an addictive personality. 
 

There are plenty of articulate, well spoken idiots.

 

Addiction has nothing to do with intelligence or being stubborn. 
Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
