  While I respect where you are coming from,  there's two concerns from a TV ratings drama standpoint regarding the team with the # 1 pick having the opportunity to host the draft:

 

  1.   The team that has the # 1 pick might announce ahead of time which player it will draft with pick # 1.   Or it might be obvious which player they will pick, even if they don't publicly announce it.     When a clear cut franchise QB is in the draft,   the chances of this happening are greatly increased.

 

 2.    The team that has the # 1 pick might trade the pick during the time frame of the end of the regular season to the hours leading up to the start of the draft.   If they trade down,   then there wouldn't be a significant negative impact.    However,  if they no longer have a 1st Round pick,  the collective fans of the team that previously had the pick will lose plenty of interest in the draft.    Most of the collective fans of a team aren't as passionate about the NFL as the people on a Forum such as this one.  

 

 Considering the extent the NFL now wants to milk the draft,   my guess is the league is going to want to know before the end of December/  early January where the NFL Draft will take place.    Especially considering the amount of hotel space that's needed.      It's starting to feel like the NFL wants to make the NFL Draft into a smaller version of Super Bowl week.
