Is there anyone in the history of the NFL who has successfully changed their mechanics from the ground up? He has been throwing the same way since he was a little kid, attempts at anything other than tweaking are historically likely to fail.

 

Impressing in preseason has been good enough to get worse players than Bortles to unseat better players than Henne.

 

Bortles mechanics aren't as bad as Tebow's entering the league.  Don't read more into my comment than intended.  I was simply pointing out that seeing him improving his mechanics in underwear practices where nobody is allowed to hit the red jersey is a far cry from when the hits are happening.  It was at that point that Tebow's "fixed" mechanics fell apart.  He didn't have adequate time to really lock it down to where it was instinctual.  The same thing could happen to Bortles if he's rushed along based on what he's doing in OTAs and mini camp. 

 

Bortles isn't being rebuilt from the ground up.  His footwork is the primary concern, and that can be coached.  If he can improve his footwork, his throwing will improve as well. 

 

We've seen how impressive preseason performances have turned out to be fools gold.
