I spend some time in St Louis (O'Fallon to be specific) for my job. I was amazed at the Cardinals support there. It's like a religion. And on the other hand, you'd barely know that they even have an NFL team.

That was my experience as well.  I know a local talkshow host out there, McGraw Milhaven.  He was my cousin's best friend growing up.  I talked to him about the sports environment out there, especially since I was out there right before the NFL draft a few years ago.  I knew that the buzz here in Jax was all about the draft, but in listening to sports talk out there, it was barely mentioned.  He's the one who actually explained the dynamic to me, and his viewpoint matched yours.  The Cardinals are a religion in St. Louis. If the Rams left tomorrow, it might make news, but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who would be genuinely upset.
