More quality than quantity this week. A lot of teams playing cupcakes but there are also a few really great games.
My teams...
Vandy vs Ole Miss - Ugh... not a great start for the new Vandy coach. Karl Dorrell is a horrible OC. They need to fire him yesterday. I'll be up in Nashville this weekend for the game. Wouldnt surprise me if I leave by halftime
UGA - BYE
other games....
MIchigan St at Oregon - Game of the week! We've been talking about this since the first day of the offseason. Not surprised Oregon is the favorite. I am surprised by how large the spread... nearly two touchdowns. I think Oregon will win but wont be surprised by any outcome. I just dont think Mich St will have seen an offense like this and have the beef up front to slow them down. Anyways my plan is to head up to Nashville friday. Enjoy the town that night. Go to Vandy/Ole Miss game Sat afternoon. Leave. Avoid all communication. Its a few hour drive to get home. Plop down on the couch and watch this game on the DVR.
USC at Stanford - I was at this game last year in the Coliseum. Was a great atmosphere. I'm sure this game up in Palo Alto will be just as good. Too bad I wont see much of it... May be able to watch the first quarter at our tailgate.
Michigan at Notre Dame - Supposedly the last time these two teams play for awhile. One of the downsides of conference expansion. The loss of rivalry games like this. Not sure who I think wins. Although I was impressed by Notre Dame's win. Maybe Rice isnt exactly a world beater but they are a D1A team that won 10 games last year. So they arent chopped liver either. The Irish offense sure does look good with Golson back there.
VaTech at Ohio St - Did I see this right? Is Ohio St an 11 point favorite!? Buckeyes looked like crap last week against Navy. I get it the Navy offense is tough to play against but the Buckeye offense was lousy. Some late scores made it look better than it was. Not really sure what to make of the Hokies as they played a IAA school week 1. They are breaking in a new QB this year but I'm not sure that's a bad thing. And their defense is usually pretty tough. Could be a low scoring game where a turnover or special teams play makes the difference.
East Carolina at South Carolina - Rough game for the Gamecocks. Their young secondary got picked apart. East Carolina has been the trendy answer to the question of which non major conference team could sneak into the 4 team playoff. If they are as good as everyone seems to think, Gamecocks cant sleep on this game. Especially coming off that big hangover.
BYU at Texas - Both teams looked impressive last week although the Texas win got a lot more publicity. Not sure what they are doing at QB with Ash going down with another concussion. That kid needs to quit playing football. Too many concussions. Last year BYU ran all over Texas. QB Taysom Hill ran for 250+. In total they ran for 550 yards!!! You know Texas wants revenge.
Colorado St at Boise - I bet I was the only person who watched the CSU-CU game last friday but CSU looked good. Dont think their QB has an NFL future but he does have an NFL skillset. Tall, big arm. Can make all the throws. And their running game was great as they brought in a Bama recruit Dee Hart. And some kid from a smaller community college that was really good as well. Boise looked surprisingly tough early against Ole Miss but eventually caved. They've obviously been the best mid-conference team for years but I think CSU can take them.
Georgia Tech at Tulane - I actually have no real interest in this game other than I want to see clips of Tulane's new stadium. They built a 30K seat stadium for only $70M. Yea $70M sounds like a lot but compared to all these other stadiums out there it's really cheap. From the mockups I've seen it looks like a really nice little stadium. Perhaps a good model for all these lower to mid level programs with a small alumni base.
Navy at Temple - I'm only interested to see if Temple is really as good as they looked against Vandy or if Vandy is really as bad as they looked.
Memphis at UCLA - I'm not really interested in this either. However UCLA's offense did look pretty lousy against UVA last week. I'm not sure UCLA is as good as everyone thought. And Memphis, while playing a small school, put up a ton of points last week. If this is a one score game at any point in the 2nd half, I'll become very interested.
