You really think he didn't? If Doss was going to be back in two weeks, it might have made sense to just keep him on the active roster. If he's going to be out until week eight, it probably makes more sense to shut him down and have him available next season than to carry dead weight on the roster for half the season in hopes that he can contribute late in the year.

Colvin's on reserve/NFI, not IR-Return. IR-Return can only be applied to a single player per season, whereas (apparently, I didn't know this until Colvin) a player on reserve/NFI can be activated after a set amount of time if they're healthy.

Pretty sure the in-season limit is 80, not 90, for a total of 17 players on reserve lists. I know that reserve/retired doesn't count against the 80, and I doubt that reserve/suspended or reserve/left squad do, but the various health-related reserve lists definitely do. I recall Coughlin bumping into this limit in his later years here, and having to release guys from IR and run with five guys on the practice squad.
