Spiders creep me out, but at the same time I find them fascinating. I've had a few tropical orb weavers construct webs in my yard. They spin a long, strong anchor strand (one once stretched from my eave to the tree next door, easily 25 feet) on which to build a gigantic web 6-7 feet across. The orb weaver tears the web down before sunrise and goes to bed (second picture). After dark they come out and build another giant web from the same anchor strand. They're absolutely fascinating and perfectly harmless.
