If you know your line sucks but could potentially work it's way up to "marginally solid most of the time" and you know your receivers need to learn the playbook -  why not take the extra weeks to get the kid fully up to speed with the playbook and keep correcting the footwork, defense recognition, and decision making?  Henne will give them no choice soon enough. Hopefully the kid is learning all the while until then. 
I meant protecting his mental state, unlike gabbert, as they said they would never do.  I'm all on board with the plan as they know more than i do.  My point was, if it were such a commitment, why not have a different backup so he won't see the field until they want him to?
