My guess is that they probably feel that he is ready to go into a game in an emergency situation.  I don't know that they are "protecting his mental state" as much as they are protecting him physically.  Why put in your future franchise quarterback when you know that you aren't even going to have a shot at a playoff spot?  Why risk getting him beat up and/or injured?  He is learning and gaining knowledge by observing from the sideline as well as watching game tape.

 

Contrary to what others think, I don't see a much different outcome from the last game had he been the starter.

 

His time will come, we just have to be patient and stick with the plan.
